OUR STORY & VISION
BEHIND SPEAK OUTSIDE THE BOX
Hi, I'm Casey!
The owner of Speak Outside The Box
My heart is full with the desire to hold a space for and bring a bright energy to the families and children that we serve. In doing so, my intention is that your child’s ability to blossom in all areas of language, communication, and daily life is meaningful and effective.
My hope is that “Speech Therapy” or “Occupational Therapy” is not a part of time taken out of the day, but is a movement that has an effect on as many present moments within your and your child’s experience as possible.
That the baby steps and lasting leaps that happen outside of “the box” are so fulfilling that they spill into all other areas of your child’s development, and maybe even into your own connection with them. My goal is that their time with us, and our time with you, is something to truly cherish.
Our Why: Behind the Name
When I moved to Tampa from upstate New York for my second job as a practicing SLP, I was hired at a local private practice in a clinical setting. I saw 12-18 children back to back for 30 minutes each per day behind 4 white walls. This dull stagnant setting wasn’t familiar or natural for the children.
I learned that an environment’s ability to create opportunities that mimic or include “real life” experiences was necessary for communication success, and that I couldn’t find that here. I also had very limited communication with the parents of the children I served, felt as if I was drowning in paperwork, used disengaging activities such as picture cards, and was unable to fully connect with these children. I was unable to see substantial success or meet the fulfillment that I knew was possible. I was drained and my purpose felt stifled.
After 8 months of this I leaned into different opportunities that allowed my independence and creative abilities to flow, and my vision became clear.
It consisted of speech therapy that took place in everyday activities and routines, involving meaningful communication parters like parents, teachers, nanny’s and other therapists, and it happened outside the dull walls of the clinical setting.
It flourished outside of high expectations that take the “play” out of the child, outside of the limits created by the “one size fits all” mentality, and most importantly outside of our minds and into the hearts of the children and families that we serve. I created Speak Outside The Box to be just that. I am forever grateful for our families, and our team of therapists, who keep filling it with their light, and the continuation of this vision.
